The Early History
The Highland games has been a long standing celebration of the heritage and culture of the Scottish Highlands. It is believed that the start of the events, that the modern day Highland Games are based on, first began during the reign of King Malcom III. It is said that he wished to find the fastest runner in Scotland to be his messenger, so he challenged the men he summoned to a race up Craig Choinnich over looking Braemer.
Much like that tale it is believed these games were held also to provide an arena where the bravest and strongest men could compete and test their abilities against one another. During these games they would also invite musicians and dancers from different clans to showcase their talents and skills in their crafts giving them a stage to bring honor and credit to the Clans they represented.

The Modern Day History
By the Mid-20th Century annual Highland Games events that were modeled after the traditional events in Scotland, along with some elements from Mod festivals, started showing up all over the world. These events gained popularity, quickly spreading throughout the world in countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa celebrating the Scottish Culture and Heritage. We at the Fisher River Highland Games are extremely excited to join these ranks in North Carolina as one of the next big Highland Games events.
